How blessed are we to enter another month of beautiful ripe fruit? The days are getting longer and we can look forward to some all-timer fruits coming into their peak season! Medjool dates. The jammiest of figs. Pomegranates. Even unique ones like pawpaw and prickly pear! Make it your October’s resolution to try a new fruit this month :)
Medjool Dates
Dates are back in season and I cannot be happier. There’s nothing like biting into a perfect medjool date. Buttery smooth. Caramel like consistency. Melts in your mouth. The perfect sweet little carb snack. Medjools are the best dates in the world.
Pink Lady
You know it’s S tier for a reason. Perfect sweetness to acidity ratio. Incredible raw or used as the main ingredient in a fall slaw.
Comice Pear
The most aesthetic looking pear in the universe. One of the best pears to eat raw, especially when its perfectly ripe. I swear they almost taste creamy!
Pomegranate
Long may pomegranate season continue into the colder months of the year. Enjoy them as a morning juice pick me up or to snack in the afternoons when you need a little break from work.
Cranberry
October is absolute peak cranberry season and you need to take advantage of this. Make cranberry sauce. Bake into sourdough. Throw a handful in your mouth whenever you feel like it.
Fuji Apple
B tier, but they are always great. You very rarely get a bad Fuji apple. They may not blow your mind like a Pink Lady but we can always rely on their consistency.
Persimmon
It’s persimmon season. Fuyu is crisp like an apple and perfect for salads. Hachiya must go fully soft before it turns into a perfect complement for yogurt.
Pawpaw
A fruit that’s native to eastern North America. Almost feels like it’s the love child of a mango and banana. Custardy soft and fragrant, peaks in October.
Raspberry
Fall is the last call for beautiful raspberries. Enjoy them before they go out of season. Scatter over your morning pancakes. Drop them into yogurt. Eat them by the dozen. There’s only so much time left.
Muscat Grapes
Aromatic and floral. Serve cold in the late afternoon. You will eat more than you planned as the case is with any perfectly ripe grape. It’s very appropriate behavior.
Black Mission Figs
We love figs. Black mission figs are one of the most beautiful varieties with the jammiest of centers and thin skin. Best enjoyed with honey yogurt or roasted with a drizzle of honey and flaky sea salt.
Prickly Pear
Elite hydration. Watermelon-berry flavor. Looks like the sunset. Great for making an agua fresca that will heal you from the inside out.
Pumpkin
Yes, pumpkin is a fruit and pumpkin spice season is upon us. Roast until deep and sweet, then pie it, make puree, or cook a hearty pumpkin soup (great for the soul).
