Compound butter, or "beurre composé" in French, is one of the easiest ways you can inject flavor and elevate a meal. The word "compound" comes from the Latin word "componere," meaning "to put together." The great thing about compound butter is that you can use just about anything. From various herbs, spices to even fruit — it's up to your imagination. Here are some combinations you can easily make at home, along with a general recipe for compound butter that anyone can make (yes, really anyone!).

1. Cilantro-Jalapeño

  • chopped fresh cilantro

  • chopped fresh jalapeño

  • lime zest

2. Garlic Compound Butter

  • pulverized roasted garlic

  • chopped fresh chives

  • lemon zest

This one is a godsend if you love garlic bread. Easily turns regular toasted sourdough into garlicky goodness. Highly recommend.

3. Chipotle Compound Butter

  • finely chopped chipotle or powder

  • smoked paprika

  • coarsely ground black pepper

  • ground cumin

4. Mixed Herb* Compound Butter

  • finely chopped basil

  • finely chopped rosemary

  • finely chopped oregano

  • minced garlic clove

  • black pepper

*You could use a combination or a singular herb, really. It’s such an easy way to just add that level of freshness to your butter. My go-tos are parsley compound butter and tarragon compound butter, especially for morning breakfast with eggs. Takes things to a whole new level.

5. Raspberry Compound Butter

  • pure raspberry jam

  • raw honey

  • lemon zest

All you’d need to make ANY compound butter:

  • Room temperature butter

  • Whisk

  • Bowl

  • Parchment paper (avoid using plastic cling wrap!)

Method:

  1. Incorporate the butter, herbs (or whatever condiments you’re using) in the bowl

  2. Make sure every ingredient is uniformly distributed

  3. Once done, roll in wax paper to shape into stick (or really any shape of your choice)

  4. And, you're done!

  5. Let it rest in the fridge for it to take shape

Variations:

Garlic Butter

  • You can use just garlic and butter, to make a spread that gives you that garlicky aftertaste we all love

  • Be careful though, it's very easy to make something that's too overpowering

  • Instead of putting minced garlic in raw or roasted, lightly boil peeled garlic cloves in salted water for about 7-8 minutes before incorporating them in

  • How much to use depends on how much garlic you like! I'd say if you boil them, about 4-5 medium sized cloves per stick work beautifully

Pepper Butter

  • Sauté some whole peppercorns in butter for 4-5 until fragrant

  • Once done, let them cool and then mash them into a puree before incorporating them with butter

How else do you enjoy having your compound butters? Don’t gatekeep it and share in the comments below 🥂

Short Primer on BSO

Cold-pressed black seed oil is incredible, and I use it the same way the average person uses a multivitamin or an antibiotic. There’s just so many benefits it’s hard to pass up on. Read more here.

Dine Alfresco

Dine alfresco this June and you’ll be the luckiest human being alive (I don’t make the rules)

Crucial Health Purchases

Things you should do before that luxury car or watch purchase:

  • Completely overhaul the quality of water in your home. Add filters to every faucet. Purify and remineralize your drinking water, or get a spring water subscription

  • Improve your wardrobe. Source based on two criteria: material & fit. Style is a prerequisite. Should be majority natural materials, but there's place for polyester as waterproof outerwear (as much as possible wear 100% cotton inners)

  • Get a premium coffee machine. Once you get used to café level coffee, it's hard to go back. Get yourself a high level coffee machine. The price range here varies a lot, what you'll need is grinder + espresso maker + frother (to put things very simply)

  • Upgrade your refrigeration game. Make sure your refrigerator is cool enough. Have a thermostats. Get an extra chest freezer to store protein. Make sure everything has a thermostat so you know when something goes bad.

  • Procure a sauna, or build one yourself. 4 to 5 hours a week will change your life. Reduces inflammation. Depression killer. Improved sleep. Lowers cortisol. Increases endorphins. No-brainer.
