Oat milk has never been more popular. More coffee chains are offering it than ever before. It’s lauded as this great milk alternative. Better for the environment. Healthier. Easier to digest. But is it, really?
The first thing is to understand exactly WHAT oat milk is. Milk as we know it is what mammals use to feed their young. We were all fed milk when we grew up, whether fed or with formula that tried mimicking the consistency and nutrient profile as close as possible.
With oats? They’re in a completely different spectrum. Oats don’t male milk. Honestly speaking, they should have never been allowed to use the term milk in the first place. It’s blatant disinformation. Oat milk is just a blend of oats, canola oil, water and sometimes nasty gums and emulsifiers. The oats themselves are usually not prepared the right way (soaked, sprouted or fermented). The average modern day oat milk is not a beverage you want to be consuming on a daily basis.
If you really need a milk alternative, opt for coconut milk. It’s the best plant-based milk out there and is the best for your gut. If you want good oat juice (it’s really oat juice not oat milk when you think about it), look for brands that don’t use any seed oils in their ingredients and only use oats and water. It’s incredibly difficult to find. Or, you can choose to soak oats yourself, blend, add some water, honey and make it yourself.
DISCLAIMER: OATS ARE NOT BAD!!
We’re human beings. We can eat every food group. Some just need to be prepared properly and grains definitely fall into that category. Are there instances where avoiding grain completely might help you? Yes. Maybe you’re healing your gut and you want to avoid it completely. Great. Just understand that if you’re perfectly healthy individual, grains can absolutely be part of a healthy diet. We were not meant to just eat steak all day (as much as I love a fatty ribeye). You can eat oats if you simply prepare them the right way, as our ancestors have always done.
This infographic is from a previous post that we did, detailing the steps you could take to cook oats properly along with a great traditional fermented oats recipe. Read it in full here:
The good news it that the tide is changing. I feel like we all collectively entered a new timeline this last year, and it’s nice to see that more people are now aware of what’s actually bad for us. For far too long we’ve been absolutely blinded by blatant misinformation and I’m incredibly optimistic for the future. We’ve never been more back!
