It’s watermelon season. There’s nothing quite like biting into a juicy watermelon after a long day out in the sun. You don’t even care if some of that juice gets all over you.
The watermelon is the perfect thirst quencher. An absolute summer staple. It’s not only one of the most hydrating things you can eat, it’s incredibly nutritious.
Watermelon is rich in citruline, an amino acid that’s usually found in a ton of pre-workouts for how it increases nitric oxide production in the body that improves cardiovascular performance. Watermelon is one of the few foods in the world that’s a natural source of citruline.
As the days get warmer, you need to be consuming more watermelon. Other than simply having the fruit on its own, there are some other creative ways you can have watermelon.
Different ways to enjoy a juicy watermelon
Fresh Watermelon Juice
Simply dice your watermelons and throw them in a blender or a food processor. You can have it as it is, or to remove the pulp using a fine-mesh strainer (which is my preferred way of drinking it). You can even drop a pinch of salt and perhaps a mint leaf or two to elevate the juice!
Watermelon Agua Fresca
Agua Fresca which literally translates to "fresh water" is a drink that's quite popular in South America. It's an incredibly easy way you can take your watermelon juice up a notch. All you'd need on top of your watermelon is ice, lime and cane sugar. Throw them in a blender while you pulse the watermelon to your desired consistency. You can also add other fruits such as honeydew and cantaloupes to your agua fresca. This is a great recipe!
Fresh Watermelon Salad
A fresh watermelon salad is one of the most refreshing things you an consume. Simply add some cool, diced watermelons to a bowl and add some feta into it. Throw in some chopped mint leaves, a pinch of sea salt, a squeeze of lemon and give that a toss. What you'll have is the most hydrating salad to ever exist.
Side Note: If you’re eating your watermelon as is, slice it in a way where you can nibble some of that juicy green flesh. It actually contains more phenolic antioxidants and even more citruline than the red flesh itself. You could even save it and blend it into juices that you make.
Choosing the right watermelon
Nobody likes biting into an under-ripe watermelon, or even worse, one that’s past its prime. If you’ve never truly loved watermelon, chances are you’ve never tasted a perfectly ripe one. Here are some key bullets to remember the next time you’re at the farmer’s market:
orange-yellow spot
not skinny elongated
hollow sound when you tap it
dark green stripes contrast well with lighter stripes
minimal bruising
ideally oval shaped
If the watermelon feels too light, pick another. When you’re deciding between two equally sized watermelons with similar characteristics, pick the heavier one. Extra weight = more juice.
Once you have your watermelon, chill it, and have it every and any way you want. Watermelon tastes of summer and is ESSENTIAL for the coming months!

You read that right…whipped brie is a thing and it’s delicious! Don’t believe me? Chef Thomas Keller serves whipped brie at his renowned Michelin star-rated restaurant The French Laundry. Chef Keller’s recipe is undeniably gourmet: He uses Brie de Meux and tops it with a port and fig compote and fleur de sel (which is fancy, flaky sea salt). I went the quicker and easier route so you can enjoy at home! The best part is that you can make it sweet or savory—I opted for mostly sweet with my honey-rosemary and blueberry jam-thyme combos. And, while it’s true you can find brie spreads in stores, nothing compares to this light and fluffy air whipped texture.
